Answers to FAQs

What is a Makerspace?
Quite simply, a Makerspace is a place to make!  Design, prototype and build. If you can dream it, we'll help you make it!

Where is the Makerspace?
The State Library Makerspace is located at the State Museum of Pennsylvania, near their auditorium on the ground floor.  This location is only temporary while we are building a new Makerspace in the Forum Building behind the State Capitol building in Harrisburg. The address is 300 North Street, Harrisburg, PA  17120

When is the Makerspace open?
The Makerspace is open by appointment Wednesday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.  Other days and hours are possible with some advanced notice! Give us a call and we'll try to accommodate your schedule.

How do I register for a class?

Classes are free and registration is easy! We will ask you for your students name, age, and emergency contact information.

Can I sit in with my child during class?
Due to space limitations, we ask you to drop off and pick up your students at the beginning and end of class.

What about lunch?
We ask that you send a packed lunch along with your child.  We will eat together in the Makerspace, and you are welcome to join us over the lunch hour if you wish. Please note we are not a "peanut free" zone and there may be allergens present in the classroom.

Can I come to certain classes or do I have to attend every class?
You're welcome to sign up for whatever classes you'd like. The Wednesday classes on Marine Biology do build off each other, but not so much that students can't follow along. Feel free to contact us if you have more questions!

What about before and after class?  Do I have to pick up my child right away?
Unless there is a special circumstance, we ask that you pick up and drop off your child close to the beginning and end times of class. Our staffing limitations cannot accommodate watching students the rest of the day. Because we are temporarily housed in the State Museum, they have their own set of rules for young people in the museum and may not be permitted. Please arrange another space for your child to wait for you until the end of your work time.

Can I visit the Makerspace without paying museum admission?
Pre-arranged visits for individuals and groups to the Makerspace are free. The makerspace is on the ground floor of the museum. Please contact us ahead of time to visit the Makerspace.

The State Museum requires you to pay an admission charge if you choose to leave the ground floor and visit the museum exhibits, however.  Please see the person at the museum desk on arrival if you would like to include the State Museum exhibits to your visit to the Makerspace.
