State Library Tours
Tours for Commonwealth Employees
The State Library of Pennsylvania is dedicated to meeting the information needs of state government and assisting Commonwealth employees’ research needs. The State Library offers tours for Commonwealth employees. Tours are scheduled upon request.
Employees will be given a tour of each of the Library’s reading rooms: the Main Reading Room, the Law and Government Publications Reading Room, the Genealogy and Local History Reading Room, and the Newspaper Reading Room. Employees will also be introduced to a number of other services available including reference service via phone or e-mail, interlibrary loan, accessing the library catalog from their office, and the many databases of available information. All this information will assist the employee in doing more effective research.
Tours for School Groups
School orientations and tours can be arranged for secondary or higher-level students and their teachers. In addition to the tour of the Law and Government Publications, Newspapers, Genealogy and Local History, and Main Reading Rooms, students will be taught the basic use of the library’s online catalog and the library’s many print and electronic resources. A teacher and/or librarian should accompany the students and be prepared to work with them as they use the State Library’s resources.
Tours for Other Groups
Groups who are interested in visiting the State Library should contact the library for a reservation. Visitors will be given a tour of each of the Library’s reading rooms: the Main Reading Room, the Law and Government Publications Reading Room, the Genealogy and Local History Reading Room, and the Newspaper Reading Room. A staff member will provide an overview of our services.
